How To Check Your Tyre Tread

Why is it so important to check your tire tread? What is the correct tread for your car? And how do you check your tread? Answers to these questions and more below!

Why is it so important to check your tyre tread?

Your vehicle’s tyres are the only part of your vehicle that makes contact with the road surface and they play an important role in how your vehicle handles. Steering and braking safety can be after by tires that are not properly cared for.

How often do I need to check my tyre pressure?

Ideally you should check your tyre depth every 2-3 weeks for damage and signs that they need to be replaced.

What is the correct tread depth for your tyres?

The minimum depth of tread on your tyres is 1.6mm, access the cents 3/4 which is 75% of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. When your tire is between  1.6 and 3mm it is time to start planning for a new set of tyres.

How do I check my tread depth?

You can quickly check your tyres by looking at the wear indicators in the grooves of the tread pattern but a more accurate test is to use a tyre depth measuring gauge. You also can use a 20p coin! Simply insert it into the lowest tread depth on your tyre. If you can’t see the outer rim on the edge of the coin then your tyre is still safe and has the minimum 3mm tyre tread. If you can see the edge of the coin then you should have your tyres checked by a professional as soon as possible.
